How to Measure and Order a Fast Arch Ceiling

Installing our Ceiling Domes

dome-install-small

Installing a Fast Arch Ceiling Dome is quick and easy:

  1. Start with the oval framing.  Each arch comes with detailed instruction on the number of support studs and the spacing for them.  We also have a solution for creating the circular framing using a Curved Radius Track header and footer.
  2. After your studs at installed, start by accurately measuring and marking the drop on each of the studs.  We can supply a metal "cylinder" that will make this process quicker.
  3. Now install the first arch.  (See the instruction for installing a Zip Arch).  Be sure to press it into place and align it with the drop line.  Lock it into place with two nails or screws going into the stud.
  4. Go to the opposite side of the dome and install the second arch in the same manner.
  5. The next step is to install a pair of arches that are perpendicular to the first pair.
  6. Now that you have the center of the arch defined, install the "Oculus."  The oculus is the ring that joins all the arches in the center top of the dome.  It's open so you can easily install lighting at the top of the dome (NOTE:  electrical boxes and fixtures should be secured to a joist, not the arch.  The arch is not designed to accomodate the weight of chandeliers or other fixtures.)
  7. Finish the dome by adding the remaining arches in order around the circumference.

Important Notes:

  • ALWAYS WORK FROM THE BOTTOM TO THE TOP WHEN INSTALLING THE INDIVIDUAL ARCHS
  • Electrical boxes and fixtures must be secured to a ceiling joist - not the arch.
  • For easier layout of the circular studs, we have designed a radius track that can be used with wood or metal studs.  The track will ensure your curves are exactly aligned and install in minutes.
  • For even easier installation on wood framing, Fast Arch has designed a double-faced magnetic hammer.  A 3/4" roofing nail can be driven through the arch nailing flange and into the wood with a single stroke.  This tool allows even very large arches to be installed by a single person and speeds installation time.  For more information on this tool and its availability, please call us.

Groin Ceiling

How To Ceiling: Groin DomesA Groin Ceiling is simply spectacular.  The intersecting curves catch light and shadow in unexpected ways and the eyes are drawn to the fascinating interaction.  At Fast Arch of America, we've harnessed the science behind the art and made it easy to build.

A groin is simply the interestion of two or more domes.  There is a rib, called a groin, at this intersection.   Finding the right intersection and the angles of the curves can drive a geometry professor to tears.  But with Fast Arch of America's Groin System, you can install a fabulous Groin Ceiling in just a couple of hours.  We take all the work out of it, but still let you take credit.

A groin ceiling kit from Fast Arch of America is much smaller than you might imagine.  We supply the "C" members, these are the arches that create the groins and the Wall Arches that are the guides on the outside walls.

In the illustration, the groin ceiling is a combination of four barrels that intersect diagonally.  We can use groins to combine domes and barrels in any combination you can dream up.  In fact, we may have already done it!  Take a look at the gallery for Specialty and Cathedral Ceilings to see some of the spectacular effects we've created and to get some inspiration.

Barrel Ceiling

Barrel Ceilings from Fast Arch of America look Great!Barrel Ceilings are like a deep arch.  With the Fast Arch Barrel Ceiling System, they go up fast and accurately, giving your finished ceiling a fabulous look.

Installing a Barrel Ceiling with the Fast Arch System is just like putting up several arches - luckily, a Fast Arch goes up in just a minute or two, so you can do average hallways in about 15 minutes or large rooms with a barrel ceiling in an hour or two.

As great looking as a Barrel Ceiling is, there are also times when you will want something a little fancier.  Check the Barrel Ceiling Gallery to see some of the ways we can add some flourish to the standard barrel ceiling.  Perhaps you need a barrel for a hallway that curves...or a barrel that ends in a dome...or how about a barrel that not only curves down the hallway but also goes up a curving stairway - changing directions in more than one plane.  We can do it...and you'll find proof in our Barrel Ceiling Gallery.

Barrel ceilings can have the same profile as a Flat Arch, Ellipse Arch or a  Half-Round Arch.

How to Measure for a Fast Arch

WIDTH:

Measure the actual width of the opening from side to side (as you look through it) of the rough frame opening.

"Flat" and "Ellipse" are usually patterned in 2" increments to allow for adjustment during installation.  This won't affect the appearance of the final product and makes installation much simpler.  In other words, 36-3/4" opening would take a 36" Flat or Ellipse Arch.

Half-Round Arches require a closer tolerance and should be measured to within 1".

DROP:

This is the measurement between the top or peak of the arch and the lowest portion of the arch.  Other terms you may have heard are the rise, leg, spring, or slope of the arch.

A good rule of thumb for an unspecified drop is to use a 6:1 ratio to the Width.  In this case, a 48" wide arch would have a drop of 8".

The drop of a half-round or half-circle arch should be 1/2 of diameter of the circle,  In other words, the drop of a half-round arch with a width of 72" would be 36"

DEPTH:

The measurement of the thickness of the opening or niche (as you look through it).  Usually it's the depth of the framing member. The measurement should be accurate to 1/4".

TYPE:

Will this be an Arch or a Niche.  Arches are passage type openings and Niches have a closed back.  The difference is in the direction of the back flange and the cost is the same.

STYLE:

Flat, Ellipse, Half-round?  Take a look at the various types of Arches to see what styles are available.  Or call us for something unique.

How To Ceiling:  Barrel Ceilings

  1. The first step is installing an arch.  We've got a detailed description in our Arches pages.
  2. Make sure you have a level line at the drop point.  If you would lie, we can supply a metal guide track that will help ensure your halways stays straight and level.
  3. Start at one end of the hall or room or work your way through to the other end.

Important Notes:

  • ALWAYS WORK FROM THE BOTTOM TO THE TOP
  • There may be an overlap or gap of up to 1" between the two half-arches. The final appearance of the arch will not be affected.

Recessed Ceiling Dome

Recessed Ceiling Domes are quick and easy to install.Fast Arch of American takes the work out of ceiling domes.  We can create domes in any size or shape - and your dome will turn out perfect every time.

A dome is simply a series of arches that rotate around a center point. Your dome can have a flat profile, ellipse profile or even a half-round profile.  To get a better idea of profiles, take a look at our arches pages.  Ceiling domes can be installed in just about any room - including rooms that are already finished - and you don't even have to tear down the current ceiling to do it.   If your ceiling is higher than 8 feet, you can do just about anything...but we've even done shallow domes in existing 8 foot rooms.

How long does it take to put up a dome using the Fast Arch Dome Ceiling System?  A 96" dome can be installed and ready to sheet-rock in about an hour!   Speaking of sheet-rocking.  You'll love our dome designs because we provide more support and surface area for installing the sheet goods.  And our structural elements are consistent in spacing so you won't spend a lot of time fitting the sheetrock either.

Fast Arch has designed everything you need to make your ceiling dome really special...including light rings that give you a 4-8 inch overhang at the bottom of the arch.  That leaves you just the right amount of space for installing a ropelight or other lighting to really show off the depth.  We also can create have radius track footer and headers for your rooms, so your curves are perfectly matched and done in minutes instead of hours.  The options are endless, but let's mention one more...curved soffits can extend the theme of the dome into other areas.  We've got the perfect product to help you make a curved soffit,  or even nested curved soffits.

We can also do interesting fluting to really get spectacular light and shadow effects.  Read more about them on our Cathedral Ceiling | Specialty Ceiling page.  Or compound domes, where a shallow dome suddenly becomes a deeper dome - sort of a dome within a dome.  And your dome doesn't have to be round either, we do oval ceilings, barrel ceilings with half domes at the end, just about anything you can dream up, we can build for you.  Take a look at our galleries on each of the dome pages to get more ideas.  You'll see why we say Any Size, Any shape, Any Time!
